Kiel Week Windjammer Parade 2023 Sailing ship in the Kiel Fjord on June 24th, 2023 with more than 100 sailing ships, steamships and private sailing boats.

The maritime highlight is the windjammer parade on the last Saturday of Kiel Week, in which numerous tall and traditional sailing ships, historic steamships and hundreds of private sailors with their sailing yachts and boats take part. The sailing training ship Gorch Fock, which was the leading ship in the sailing parade last year, did not take part in the windjammer parade this year. The Gorch Fock is currently on a training trip in the Mediterranean.

When the sun was shining and the temperatures were summery, you could either go on one of the numerous ships as part of an accompanying trip. These places were of course limited. Another 150,000 people watched the Windjammer Parade 2023 from land. As in the previous year, the participating ships were lined up in advance: the lead ship, the Alexander von Humboldt II, was followed by several groups of ships. Each of these groups was led by a traditional sailor, followed by other sailing ships and private sailors who were included in the formation of the parade for the Windjammer Parade 2023.

There were a total of 6 groups at the windjammer parade this year:

  • A1: Alexander von Humboldt II
  • B1: Roald Amundsen
  • C1: Capitán Miranda (sail training ship from Uruguay)
  • D1: Thor Heyerdahl
  • E1: Gulden Leeuw
  • F1: Santa Barbara Anna

There were other ships worth seeing in these 6 groups, including the Artemis, Stortemelk, Zuiderzee, J.R. Tolkien, Jantje, Eye of the Wind, Hansekogge, Atlantis, Abel Tasman, Banjaard and many more.

The largest ship in the sailing parade was the 3-masted schooner Gulden Leeuw, measuring 70.1 metres. Another highlight of the windjammer parade 2023 was the 64 meter long Capitán Miranda, a sail training ship from Uruguay in South America.

Photos and video of the Kiel Week Windjammer Parade 2023 were again taken from Falckensteiner Strand. Here at the Friedrichsort lighthouse you always have a very good view of the windjammer parade with the numerous ships passing by.
