Kiel Week Windjammer Parade 2019 – Sailing ships in the Kiel Fjord on June 29th, 2019 in fantastic summer weather.

The windjammer parade in Kiel during Kiel Week is one of the highlights of the annual Kiel Week. When the windjammer parade takes place, always on the last Saturday of Kiel Week, tens of thousands of spectators are drawn to the west and east banks of the fjord. And although fewer tall ships and traditional ships took part in the windjammer parade this year than in previous years, there were significantly more spectators due to the good weather. Around 130,000 people watched the passing ships this year, for example from the Falckensteiner beach on the west bank or from the beach in Mönkeberg on the opposite side of the fjord.

The windjammer parade 2019 was led by the Russian sailing training ship Mir, a three-masted ship with a distinctive white and blue hull. The windjammer parade always starts at 11 a.m. In addition to the many tall and traditional sailing ships, historic ships and countless other ships and sailing boats, the water police and coast guard are of course also on the move on the fjord with probably all the ships available locally. After all, with such a large number of ships in the fjord, there is an increased risk of accidents and collisions.

Sailing on one of the participating ships

On many of the sailing ships, including the Mir, you could sail during the windjammer parade. These places are always in great demand and many of the ships are already fully booked for weeks during the event. Therefore, sailing along is only conditionally suitable for those who decide on the spur of the moment. But a place on one of the sailing ships booked several weeks in advance also harbors a certain degree of uncertainty. Because who knows in April or May what the weather will be like for the windjammer parade during the Kiel Week at the end of June. This year probably everyone on board the ships loved the weather. But there is another way. I keep remembering watching the tall ship parade on board a ship a few years ago in heavy fog and hours of drizzle…
