Cancellation of all major events on land: Kiel Week 2021 from September 4th to 12th will be significantly smaller than originally planned. There will be no large stages, play areas, the international market and much more this year.
The city of Kiel, many Kieler Woche fans and the entire event industry had imagined things differently. But it is ultimately not entirely unexpected that the Kiel Week 2021 in September will not take place anywhere near the way it was before the Corona pandemic. Because the corona numbers are increasing again in Kiel, throughout Schleswig-Holstein and throughout Germany. COVID-19 is far from over and that means that after 2020 the Kiel Week will not take place in the usual form in 2021 either.
Around two months before the start of Kiel Week in early September 2021, the city of Kiel announced that almost all events on land could nottake place due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, there will be no concerts on large stages on Rathausplatz, Hörn, Ostseekai, Kiellinie, Asmus-Bremer-Platz and numerous other stages this year. The windjammer parade (on September 11, 2021), fireworks (September 12, 2021), sailing cinema and sailing competitions on the water with participants from all over the world should still take place. In addition, there is talk of decentralized district festivals, which can also take place this year.
The organizers of the Kiel Week have again emphasized that health and protection come first. The cancellation means another setback for the event industry, showmen, musicians and gastronomy. Urgently needed orders, appearances and sales will therefore not take place during Kiel Week 2021 as hoped.
