Christmas markets 2020: State capital Kiel gives the green light for the Kiel Christmas markets 2020. However, there will be some limitations.
In about two months it will be that time again, when the Christmas markets will open in numerous German cities. It is now certain that the Kiel Christmas markets will also take place in 2020. It starts on November 23, 2020, like last year on Holstenplatz, Rathausplatz, Alter Markt, Asmus-Bremer-Platz and Holtenauer Straße. However, the corresponding corona rules will of course also apply to the Christmas markets in the state capital. Their implementation will understandably lead to restrictions and changes.
More space for booths and wider ways
The risk of spreading COVID-19 should be minimized as much as possible, which is why the Christmas market stalls are set up at a greater distance from each other. This applies to all Kiel Christmas markets. In addition, the aisles for visitors are to be made wider. And the well-known distance markings from the supermarkets will also be used at the Kiel Christmas market. Since there will be significantly fewer stalls on the markets this year, there is of course already a solution for this: Christmas market stalls, which are normally located on Holstenplatz and Asmus-Bremer-Platz, will simply be set up on Holstenstrasse. And if you can’t find a place on the town hall square, you can move your booth to the Bootshafen. But what about the new Christmas market Maritime Magic Lights, which was to take place for the first time this year at the Kiel boat harbor? Canceled for 2020, the Maritime Light Magic will probably be postponed to 2021.

Anyone who has been to the Kiel Week 2020 this year will certainly remember the cordoned-off event areas on the town hall square, in the palace garden or in the Bootshafen. However, the Kiel Christmas markets are not fenced off and cordoned off according to a similar concept. Anyone who would like to visit the Kiel Christmas Market spontaneously can do so without reserving a ticket in advance.
However, some detailed questions have not yet been clarified. For example, it is still unclear whether there will be a general obligation to wear masks. Anyone standing in a queue at the booths must definitely wear a mouth and nose protector. For many, the crucial question is also still open: Will mulled wine also be served at the Kiel Christmas market 2020? The sale of alcohol has not yet been finally clarified at this point in time.
Christmas elf Kielian will not hover over the town hall square in 2020
Anyone who is looking forward to seeing the Christmas elf Kielian in his sleigh and the reindeer on the town hall square again has to wait another year. Because the city administration has decided that Kielian will not fly over the Christmas village this year. Finally, large crowds of people should be avoided.
