Another luxury yacht in the canal: Lürssen 90 meter mega yacht 1601 on March 17th, 2023 underway in the Kiel Canal on the way to multi-day test drives in the Baltic Sea.
On Friday afternoon, a megayacht suddenly lay a few meters from the pier of the Adler I canal ferry on the Holtenau side of the Kiel Canal for more than an hour. The 90 meter long yacht was a new build by the Lürssen shipyard in Schacht-Audorf. A few hours earlier, the yacht 1601, as the mega yacht was previously called, left the Lürssen shipyard in Schacht-Audorf in the direction of the Kiel Canal lock Holtenau. A test drive lasting several days is now pending for the yacht, after all the entire ship with all its functions (including a hanger for dinghies, a retractable helipad and lots of other technology) must be extensively tested before the megayacht 1601 can be shipped to the owner can be handed over.
Of course, there were reasons why the grey-white megayacht 1601 had lain so long in front of Holtenau before entering the lock chamber (after all, arriving ships normally simply enter the lock chamber that is already open). Because the brand new yacht or rather the captain of the 1601 wanted to be locked with his mega yacht without other ships in the lock chamber from the canal into the Kiel Fjord. Most likely, the aim was to minimize the risk of damage in the lock as much as possible. And suddenly everything happened very quickly: the yacht drove into the lock chamber and the lock gate was closed. Just a few minutes later, the lock gate to the fjord opened and the mega yacht left the lock for the Baltic Sea.

The Lürssen shipyard has not yet provided any information about the customer for the 90-meter-long mega yacht 1601 with a helipad on board. However, it is suspected that this yacht could be the successor to the 70 meter long yacht “Skat” built by Lürssen around 20 years ago. And also very little is known about the total costs for the construction of the mega yacht 1601. Roughly estimated, the total cost of this yacht should be around 100-150 million euros.
And just a week earlier, a mega yacht from the Lürssen shipyard was also underway in the Kiel Canal. Here the shell of the 115 meter long mega yacht Project Cosmos was towed from the shipyard in Schacht-Audorf to the TKMS shipyard in Kiel in order to then complete the mega yacht in the Kiel shipyard.
