Exercise in the Kiel Fjord: NATO frigates are attacked by special forces of the Navy in the fjord after the naval ships had left the naval base for the Baltic Sea.
The KSM, which is the Special Forces Command of the Navy, had simulated mock raids on several frigates of the NATO Task Force 1 (Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 / SNMG 1) in an exercise in the Kiel Fjord on April 3rd, 2023. Five frigates from Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) were guests at the Kiel naval base over the weekend. On Monday morning (April 3, 2023), the ships left the Kiel naval port for the Baltic Sea. But at the Friedrichsort lighthouse and on the opposite side of the fjord, special forces of the German Navy had prepared an ambush with several Boomranger speedboats. Here at the Friedrichsorter Enge, a bottleneck in the Kiel Fjord, was the perfect place for an ambush and a drill for a naval threat.
The Navy’s special forces carried out a total of five mock attacks on passing frigates here in the fjord that day. The attacks were accompanied by sirens, announcements and shots with various weapons fired by the crews of the ships attacked by the KSM. Of course, these were only blanks, after all it was an exercise.
From the lighthouse on Falckenstein Beach you could watch the exercise of the soldiers from the Special Forces Command of the Navy (KSM) very well and the scenario seemed quite realistic. Well hidden behind the lighthouse, they waited for the right moment to attack the frigates simultaneously from both sides of the fjord. And with each attack, shots could be heard coming from the direction of the frigates.

The Marine Special Forces Command (KSM) is a special forces unit of the German Navy and, alongside the Special Forces Command and the 4th flying squadron of Helicopter Squadron 64, is part of the Bundeswehr Special Forces. The core of the maritime special forces are the combat swimmers of the German Navy. The command is stationed in Eckernförde and is part of the 1st Operations Flotilla.
