Gorch Fock: The expensive and long refurbishment is coming to an end. In just a few months, the sailing training ship Gorch Fock will be back in Kiel at the Tirpitz Mole.
In the meantime, the renovation of the sail training ship with its home port of Kiel has been taking more than 5 years and the costs, once estimated at around 10 million euros, have exploded over time for various reasons and now amount to around 135 million euros. But now the end of the renovation seems to be in sight. The renovated Gorch Fock was put back into the water at the shipyard in Lower Saxony yesterday. The joy of the crew and the commander of the Gorch Fock was correspondingly great.
Various finishing touches are still missing on the sail training ship, such as the interior fittings and the rigging.

And then in about two and a half months the time has finally come: It is planned that the sailing training ship Gorch Fock will be handed over to the Navy on May 31, 2021. It will be interesting to see whether the planned handover date can be met or whether there may be a further delay. Accordingly, the exact date when the Gorch Fock will be back at the Tirpitzmole in the Tirpitzhafen Kiel naval base in the Wik is not yet known. What is certain, however, is that the Gorch Fock will return to Kiel fairly soon after completion. Because in July 2020 the first training trip after the renovation is already planned for the sailing training ship Gorch Fock.

Kiel Week 2021: Windjammer Parade with Gorch Fock?
It is also unclear at this point in time whether the Gorch Fock will possibly lead the windjammer parade 2021 at Kiel Week at the end of June. Because that depends on two factors. On the one hand, it will not be decided until the end of March whether the Kiel Week 2021 will take place at the end of June as planned and under what conditions. As already mentioned, it is also not certain at the moment whether the Gorch Fock was handed over to the Navy again and the three-master is moored at the Tirpitzmole. But it is definitely about time that the Gorch Fock was sighted again in the Kiel Fjord.
