Good news for motorists who have to drive over the Holtenauer Hochbrücken: since December 7th, traffic has been rolling over the Prinz-Heinrich-Bridge again, albeit with restrictions.
After about a week of full closure of both Holtenau high bridges (Olympic Bridge, direction of travel north and the Prince Heinrich Bridge, direction of travel south) vehicles up to 3.5 tons can finally drive over the Prince Heinrich Bridge again. Everything was prepared for the opening of the bridge on Tuesday, including setting up the new traffic routing. And on Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. it started, cars could cross the bridge again. The bridge is now open to traffic daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., one lane in each direction now leads over the Prinz-Heinrich-Bridge and a speed limit of 50 km/h applies.
To ensure that no vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons cross the Holtenau high bridge, the police carry out visual checks on both sides of the high bridge. In these areas in front of the bridge, the permissible speed has been reduced to 30 km/h.
Feeder Wik and Holtenau not yet released
There are currently restrictions not only with regard to the time, because due to further work, the Prinz Heinrich Bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the time being. In addition, it is currently not possible to use Prinz-Heinrich-Straße coming from Wik to drive north over the Holtenauer Hochbrücke. In this case, road users must drive in the direction of the Holstein Stadium and from there then north and the Holtenauer Hochbrücke.
The Holtenau feeder road for vehicles wishing to cross the B 503 federal highway in a southerly direction has also not yet been released. If you want to drive from Holtenau to Kiel, you first have to take the B 503 north past the airport and then take the Altenholz-Stift exit, in order to then go straight back on the B 503 towards Kiel.
Traffic jam or free travel at the Holtenauer Hochbrücke: The time is crucial!
Even though the Prinz-Heinrich-Bridge is now open again in one lane in each direction from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., drivers still have to be prepared for sometimes long traffic jams in front of the bridge. Above all, of course, in the morning (especially the B 503 from the north towards Kiel) and in the afternoon after work. Here it accumulates, especially on the route from Kiel to the north.
However, if you drive over the Holtenauer Hochbrücke in the late morning or around noon, no matter in which direction, you are a little luckier. In any case, on Wednesday, the day the Prinz-Heinrich-Bridge was reopened, you could cross the bridge reasonably quickly between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (observing the speed limits, of course).
Olympiabrücke still closed to traffic
The Olympic Bridge, on the other hand, the slightly older of the two high bridges, will remain closed, probably for several more months. The bridge was significantly more damaged than the Prince Heinrich Bridge when it collided with a crane boom on board the cargo ship Meri. Only cyclists and pedestrians, police and fire brigade emergency vehicles and ambulances are allowed to cross the Olympic Bridge.
