Kiel Week 2021: Sailing and summer festival in the state capital of Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein.
The Kiel Week is an annual sailing regatta that has been held in Kiel on the Kiel Fjord since the end of the 19th century. It is considered one of the largest sailing events in the world. In recent decades, a folk festival has also developed on the quay walls of the tall ships, although the core of the Kiel Week has always remained the sailing competitions.
In addition to the sporting aspects, the Kiel Week includes an extensive program with over 2,000 individual events, including performances by international and regional bands and artists who offer live music in around 300 concerts on 16 stages.
There are also performances by numerous local groups on smaller stages. Every year around 3 million guests visit the Kiel Week, including numerous naval units from over 10 nations.
The maritime highlight is the windjammer parade (annually since 1998) on the last Saturday of the festival week, in which more than 100 tall and traditional sailing ships, historic steamships and hundreds of sailing yachts take part.
Attention: Due to the corona pandemic, it was decided in March 2021 that the Kiel Week 2021 would be postponed from June to September.
