Tourism in Kiel is recovering after the corona pandemic: guest arrivals and overnight stays in 2022 were again at about the level of 2019.
The tourist balance of the state capital Kiel for the past year 2022 is quite positive. Because from January to December 2022, Kiel was again able to record as many visitors in terms of the number of guest arrivals and overnight stays in Kiel as in 2019, i.e. the year before the pandemic. Comparisons with the two Corona years 2020 and 2021 make relatively little sense, since during this time travel was only possible to a limited extent or not at all due to various restrictions and closed hotels. So the comparison of 2022 with 2019 is all the more interesting. And this shows that in 2022 only around 4,000 fewer guests came to Kiel than in 2019. In total there were around 408,500 guest arrivals in 2022. A comparison of overnight stays shows that there was an increase in 2022 compared to 2019. After around 866,000 overnight stays in 2019, Kiel recorded almost 910,000 overnight stays in 2022. This means that slightly fewer guests arrived, but on average the guests stayed in Kiel a little longer than in 2019.
One of the reasons that is partly responsible for a longer stay in Kiel could be the reason for traveling to Kiel. Because the proportion of conference guests and business trips has decreased compared to 2019. Instead, the proportion of overnight stays in the area of vacation and leisure tourism has increased significantly. This trend also has an impact on accommodation, to which hotels in downtown Kiel in particular should respond. Accommodation for single travelers, which is the norm for business travelers, was less in demand. At the same time, the demand for family rooms with several beds and family-friendly apartments increased.
