The Kiel naval base is home to numerous departments and authorities and of course parts of the German Navy. The Tirpitzhafen is the home port of the Gorch Fock, the well-known sail training ship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, anti-mine units (3rd minesweeper squadron) as well as support and supply ships are based in Tirpitzhafen Kiel.<\/p>\n<p>The Tirpitzhafen is named after Alfred von Tirpitz (Alfred Peter Friedrich Tierpitz, from 1900 von Tirpitz), a German grand admiral. Tirpitz lived from 1849 to 1930 and was State Secretary of the Imperial Navy Office from 1897 to 1916.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Ship during Kiel Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like all military facilities, the Tirpitzhafen is only accessible to certain groups of people. Except during the Kiel Week, when the Tirpitzhafen is open to the public for a total of three days as part of the Open Ships. However, personal and bag checks are also carried out when entering the base at Open Ship. Numerous German and international naval ships can be visited on these three days, an experience for young and old.<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:800px)
